When I hear Johnny doing it, I stop myself going and buying those syringes. For real. It's a fucking great deterrent.

I always play this song before I got to sleep for some reason it makes me feel thankful for all of things that happen to me, I have my own interpretations of what the song is talking about, I think we all may but only Johnny can make u s all feel the same way when we hear his music.

It makes me feel kinda sad, it sounds like he knew that his time was coming and I can hear the remourse in his voice. His voice is very aged, but he's still got it. The only think I don't like about his song is that it seems to be the only Johnny Cash song people of this generation know, and the first thing to come out of their mouth when you say Johnny Cash is "Hurt", well there are better songs that that, and that song should not be the only one that comes to mind when you hear his name, what about I walk the Line, or Ring of Fire, the list goes on and on, and it's too bad that most poeple don't even realize that he has tons of great songs.

It's not even his song..... People need to hear his Sun Records stuff to really appreciate him.

I think it is amazing how he made such an impact on a song that was realeased by NIN over 10 years ago, in all honesty, I was not a fan of NIN version, it really suited Johnny and a perfect end to an incredible life :o) The first time I saw the video, I cried. expecially when you see June standing over him on the stairs ........ so sad ... at least they are together again

Whenever I'm in a funk, I put "Get Rythm" on. I can't help but tap my foot at least or sing along, which always cheers me up. Simple but true words.

I just don't like the people who say, "Oh yeah, I love Johnny Cash! That song 'Hurt' is sooo good!!" Mostly because they don't know it's a NIN cover...

I agree, at the very least it makes his music go on and newer generations will carry it further, it does suck that that's all they know of him but hopefully it will spark their interests to listen to some of his other stuff !

It's almost always a good thing when something connects different generations because if the "old" artist is that good then they will find their way to the classic material and the new generation will be turned on. I got into Cash because of Dick Dale and I think they are both geniuses.

When I hear him do Hurt, I get invigorated. The energy is fantastic. Sure its a sad song but sad songs always get my blood pumping.

the tone of the recording and the video is that tone that older people get when they know thier number is up. taking care of alot of older people in my family i recognize it well.
its the disappointment (to me) about how little time we have on this mudball and all the stupid things we do without thinking of ourselves or others in the long run. because all that really matters is your loved ones and your health. everything else is just vanity, self pity and egotistical bullshit.
we have this preconcieved notion of what life is and what we will be and in the end it doesnt matter. nothing like that matters in the least.

my parents always try to drive me in the direction of making a well to do life. but from all my memories not one included shopping or vacations. it was stuff like baking cookies or debating over icicles or tinsle for the tree...or some wierd bug that my little brother would chase me with....
not degrees and savings and investments and being in bands....

i think when you come to that age you dont think that...you KNOW it. and then you reflect on all your wasted time and percieved failures tht were nothing more than an experience.

Hurt is so full of emotion like all Cash songs, but that one can really chokes me up. Especially when someone close to you hurts you or you hurt someone you love.

    What have I become
    My sweetest friend
    Everyone I know
    Goes away in the end
And you could have it all
    My empire of dirt
    I will let you down
    Iwill make you hurt

I think that there are many, many songs by JC that are superior to this cover, but it is so evocative. It brings whatever is down deep right up to the surface for me, always, and to me that is the hallmark of a good song. I have heard that Reznor was actually pissed that Johnny covered this song, and I believe that it is because when Johnny sings it, it sounds like HIS song. There is so much one could interpret to be a direct line on Johnny's life, written by another man. I would have been honored if I were Trent, but some people have egos that are too fragile to accept that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
American IV is not the first album that I think of when I consider JC, but I do think of it as one of the finest albums to come out in the past decade, for the breadth of its emotional landscape.

watching the video is rather intense. particulary since June is in it, and knowing that she died pretty much right after it was completed.
