Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley and Company.

Here are some links to articles, that I felt were interesting! Enjoy!

Singer, Songwriter, Guitarist Jerry Reed Dies at 71.

R.I.P. Jerry

I did not realize just how many artist that he had collaborated with! I had always assumed that he wrote Tom Jones' "Green, Green, Grass of Home", but I was mistaken. Apparently Tom Jones did however collaborate with many of the same artist that Jerry Reed had, when Jones had decided to cross over into the "Country Market".
A Really Nice Web-Page Devoted to Elvis Presley's Gospel Music!

From Heaven's Gate.Com
Link:http://heavens-gates.com/gospel/elvis.html

This is really nice & professionally put together Johnny Cash fan-site, including a gospel page! Although Elvis is known for being the "King of Rock "N" Roll" and Johnny Cash was "The Man in Black", It is my opinion, that they are the best gospel singers of all-time as well! Elvis also had gospel backing from the Jordana-ires, while Cash had gospel backing from the Statler Brothers!

I know Johnny Cash did a version of this Bruce Springsteen tune but can't find it.
This guy was Johnny Cash's son in law, and was successful as a songwriter(Johnny Cash, Elvis Costello, Dave Edmunds) and record producer(The Damned, Elvis Costello, Graham Parker, Carlene Carter, Paul Carrack), but this was his only hit for himself.
I found this recording of Johnny Cash singing the old "Traditional Folk Standard" "Sloop John B" by accident. Most people are familiar with the Beach Boys' version. "Sloop John B" is one of my favorites, by the group, but this version is really cool, as well and different.

i did once, for about 15 seconds. we were standing in the lobby of the fillmore before the show and he just wandered by (i always have imagined in my mind that his bus had just pulled up from the show at some county fair the night before) and said hello. he really did have that larger than life aura, but at the same time very friendly. and then he put on a rip roaring show.

Hey Kids,

I was surfing around Tribe and found this page. Man I love Johnny Cash. I play in a band called No Alternative and started doing Cash songs 25 years ago. We even managed to get a live version on to one of our CDs. This summer we're recording tracks for our next CD at Sun Studios in Memphis. If you ever get a chance to go there do so. The guys and gals who work their are young and play in bands. These kids (I'm 46 so I can use the term "kid") are really into the whole legacy of Sun. The studio looks the same as it did back in the 1950s. It closed for a while and was actually a scuba diving store (In Memphis)? You can also find a lot of really cool Cds of their early years. If you like blues you can drive 45 minutes from Memphis and go to Clarksdale Mississippi home of the crossroads. If anyone is planning a trip down to Memphis let me know because I go down there 2 or 3 times a year and know a bunch of cool places to see (especially if you like Johnny Cash). Don't for get to check out Jackson.

9/5 50th anniversary of "I Walk The Lines Debut"

Written by Johnny Cash
Recorded 4/2/56
Debuted 9/5/56
Number one - Country Chart; Number 17 - Pop Chart
Number 26 - Top 100 Country Hits of All-Time

History

"I Walk the Line" is a song written by Johnny Cash and recorded in 1956. UK goth/industrial band Alien Sex Fiend released a track of the same name in 1986. A 1970 movie starring Gregory Peck and featured a soundtrack of Johnny Cash songs including the title song.

The song is about Cash staying faithful to his wife at the time, Vivian while on the road: I find it very, very easy to be true/I find myself alone when each day is through/Yes, I'll admit that I'm a fool for you/Because you're mine/I walk the line.

The song is very simple and like most Cash songs, the lyrics tell more of a story than the music conveys. (You've got a way to keep me on your side/You give me cause for love that I can't hide/For you I know I'd even try to turn the tide).

It is based upon the "boom-chicka-boom" or "freight train" rhythm common in many of Cash's songs. In the original recording of the song, there is a key change between each of the five verses, and Cash hums the new root note before singing each verse. The final verse is sung a full octave lower than the first verse, in the deep bass range that Cash (and relatively few others) could hit with ease.

The unique chord progression for the song was inspired by an accidental backwards playback on Cash's tape recorder while he was in the Air Force. Later, he wrote the lyrics in a backstage dressing room in Gladewater, Texas, after a discussion with fellow performer Carl Perkins encouraged him to adopt "I Walk the Line" as the song title. Cash originally intended the song as a slow ballad, but producer Sam Phillips preferred a faster arrangement, which Cash grew to like as the uptempo recording met with success.

Lyrics

I keep a close watch on this heart of mine
I keep my eyes wide open all the time
I keep the ends out for the tie that binds
Because you're mine, I walk the line

I find it very, very easy to be true
I find myself alone when each day is through
Yes, I'll admit that I'm a fool for you
Because you're mine, I walk the line

As sure as night is dark and day is light
I keep you on my mind both day and night
And happiness I've known proves that it's right
Because you're mine, I walk the line

You've got a way to keep me on your side
You give me cause for love that I can't hide
For you I know I'd even try to turn the tide

I have come to love Johnny Cash through my Dad... My Dad has been a fan of the man in black for many years. I grew up hearing his music and now it is in my soul forever... I took my Dad to see the movie "Walk the Line" and we loved it. We thought it was a good movie.
In my opinion Johnny Cash was a real man who was not afraid to share his humanity with the world. I admire him. Some of his songs deeply touch my heart and bring tears to my eyes.
I look forward dot being part of this tribe.

Sincerely,

Hi there, I am new to this tribe. I've been a fan of the Man in Black since I was around 5 or 6 years old. My parents introduced me to his music, and it did not take long until I knew almost every song by heart. Alas, my knowledge of his lyrics has wanec, but my passion for his music and appreciation for his talent and his life have not.

I look forward to getting to know many of you and sharing some of our fondest memories and insights on this indomitable musical force of nature.

today is the birthday of june carter cash.

1929 June Carter Cash, C&W vocals/guitar, b. Maces Springs, VA, USA. née: Valerie June Carter. aka: June Carter. Wife of Johnny Cash Also worked as part of 'The Carter Family' (for which she is best known).

AMG BIO:
Biography by Zac Johnson
Songwriter, singer, actress, comedienne, and matriarch of country music June Carter Cash was born Valerie June Carter in Maces Springs, VA, on June 23, 1929. Taught by her mother (the legendary Mother Maybelle Carter of the Carter Family) to play autoharp, June entered the spotlight in 1937 singing with her sisters Helen and Anita, eventually performing as the Carter Sisters after the death of June's uncle A.P. Her good humor and quick wit prompted June to perform comedy skits and monologues during the show, and led to a novelty recording of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" with country comics Homer & Jethro which eventually hit number nine on the country charts in 1949.

In 1952, Carter married Carl Smith, with whom she performed at Nashville's Grand Ole Opry, and their daughter, Rebecca Carlene (later to record under the name Carlene Carter), was born in 1955. After their divorce in the late '50s, Carter was managed by Colonel Tom Parker and toured with Elvis Presley, and while living in Nashville, she met and briefly married local police officer Rip Nix with whom she another daughter, Rosie. Although Carter dabbled in acting during the '50s, she returned to the musical stage in 1961 when the Carters joined Johnny Cash's road show. Rumor has it that Cash had kept an eye on June since her appearances with the Carter Sisters in the early '50s, commenting, "I'm going to marry that girl someday" (despite the fact that both of them were still married to other people at the time). In 1963, Carter co-wrote the song "Ring of Fire" with Merle Kilgore, which Cash (supposedly June's inspiration for the song) took to number one. Their Grammy-winning duet "Jackson" came true when Cash and Carter "got married in a fever hotter than a pepper sprout" in 1968. Cash has long credited June for forcing him to shake his addiction to amphetamines and encouraging his spiritual development, saying, "she is the person responsible for me still being alive. She came along at a time in my life when I was going to self-destruct." Another Grammy (for "If I Were a Carpenter") and the birth of Carter's third child, son John Carter Cash, followed in 1970.

June Carter Cash left the spotlight for most of the '70s and '80s, stating, "I worked with John, but I had enough sense to walk just a little ways behind him. I could have made more records, but I wanted to have a marriage." She did, however, write two autobiographies (1979's Among My Klediments and 1987's From My Heart) and also did some acting, notably on Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman and alongside Robert Duvall in The Apostle. She did eventually return to recording, releasing a collection of both traditional folk songs and Carter Cash originals entitled Press On in 1999 which won a Grammy for best traditional folk album. Johnny Cash's health seemed to deteriorate throughout the '90s just as his career went through a renaissance, and many fans were shocked when June Carter Cash died suddenly on May 15, 2003, following complications from heart surgery. Given the fact that she had remained apparently rock solid as he got weaker and weaker, it seemed as though Johnny might pass on, but Carter Cash would live forever. Luckily, she does live on today; through the children she raised (many of whom have become musicians themselves), through her writing and appearances on film, through the contributions she made to her husband's life, and most clearly in the music she left behind.

How are you planning to celebrate it?

Me -- recently downloaded songs from his Roads Less Travelled CD, which includes 18 Sun Records songs recorded 1955-58. Found it at the local library, and have holds on more so maybe this week they'll become available. Also will try to memorize some of his songs for singing at bluegrass jams and figure out appropriate fiddle licks for them. Would like to read the various biographies on him, including his own, before his birthday, but they're all checked out.

On Sunday I plan on playing all 136 of his songs that I've got, at least twice, will dress in black, and will remember him fondly.

---
James Mangold’s film portrayal of Johnny Cash in "Walk The Line" gives insight into the musician’s transition to artistic maturity, but for Charlie Devereux, the story it omits is just as interesting

WALK THE LINE - I just saw it!!!

WALK THE LINE
**************
http://www.walkthelinethemovie.com/

*This commentary contains no spoilers, but does contain a few plot details*

I went to see this fantastic flick today and, man, was I not disappointed at all!

It was great to see a biopic that isn't just about physical imitation (as Witherspoon & Phoenix don't look like the folks they're playing to start with) and relies on the actor's innate, intense, and instictive portrayal of their character's emotional and psychological truths, and in this pic, there were many truths to relay.

Writer/director James Mangold (Girl, Interrupted, Copland, accomplished what he stated he was setting out to do - to create a film that celebrates both the icon and the fallible man that was Johnny Cash.

Our two leads, Joaquin Phoenix & Reese Witherspoon, both deliver incredible performances reflecting Cash and Cartre's intensities as well as their subtlties.

I must admit that Mangold does juggle the story with what may be seen as too heavy a hand at times, playing up Cash's drug addiction and self-centeredness more so that the portions of life that offered him joy, which is where the concert and musical performance scenes come in and offer the film's viewer's a bit of a break from these torments.

The story is told very simply, thank goodness, and it is a film that could have fallen into a stylized trap. We are introduced to the story at a pivotal point in Cash's carreer & life, just prior to walking onto the stage at Fulsom Prison, and then the story jumps back & unfolds, giving us a good look at Cash's troubled, dirt-poor, childhood, his battles with drugs, his womanizing, and his ego, his tours with June Carter, Elvis, and Jerry Lee Lewis, his obsession with June, all to loop back to the Fulsom scenario and move a wee bit further beyond in his life.

Reese Witherspoon, an actress whom I've always admired, is amazing as the confident & amusing woman behind the mic when speaking, den-mother to the touring gaggle of unruly young men (Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, & Roy Orbison), June Carter. It was nice to see her in a flick that ain't a comedy for a change! She gets to spread her dramatic wings some.Hey - Whether she's playing a flakey blonde (Legally Blonde) or the not-so-girl-next-door-like 90's gal unwillingly dropped into a 50's TV scenario (Pleasantville), she moves through her characters naturally, with a crackling energy, and with more depth than scripts often offer her.

Phoenix again shows his diversity as an actor deeply dedicated to his craft. I think many may simply percieve him as the "rebel without a cause" sorta actor, and if you find yourself guilty of that inaccurate view of him, catch "WALK THE LINE", as well as his role as Commodus, the spoiled, pretentious, heartless, almost fey emperor in "Gladiator", not to mention his portrayal of the intensely religious, yet contradictory character of the Abbe du Coulmier (next to the brilliant Geoffry Rush) in "Quills."
in "Quills."

All in all, a great lil' movie, especially for those lovers of Cash!
*
For those into vintage 50's clothing - You'll be dyin' for the costumes in this movie, not to mention the cars!

Best,
T.Paul
(And no, I am *not* interested in being the Moderator. I just like to help out when I can. )
--
The Johnny Cash biography "Walk the Line" won the Golden Globe for best musical or comedy film last night (Jan. 16) and earned acting honors for stars Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon, boosting their Academy Awards prospects.

Phoenix and Witherspoon won for best actor and actress in a movie musical or comedy for the biopic that follows country legend Cash's career and his long courtship with the love of his life, June Carter.

The Globe audience clapped along to Cash's song "I Walk the Line" as Phoenix took the stage. "Who would ever have thought that I would win in the comedy or musical category?" said Phoenix, poking fun at his image for dark, brooding roles. "Not expected."

Phoenix, who did his own singing in the film, thanked "John and June for sharing their life with all of us."

"This film is really important to me," said Witherspoon, who offers a spirited performance and fine singing as Carter. "It's about where I grew up, it's about the music I grew up listening to, so it's very meaningful."

A recent review of Torres' music quotes:
"...Pep Torres sticks to his Latin roots, in the Valens style, gets close to those pretty faces like Ricky Nelson, and let's himself go with the rockabilly airs of Cochran or Vincent."

The Oregonian (Portland’s daily newspaper) affirms:
“Pep Torres is one of the keepers of the rockabilly flame…'”

Latino-rocker/crooner PEP TORRES, from Hollywood, CA, plays his own blend of 50’s style rock & roll, rockabilly, doo-wop, and rhythm and blues. Pep puts on an incredible show of highly energetic and danceable numbers as well as tender ballads, emphasizing his uniqueness by singing in both English and Spanish!

He has appeared all over the United States and Canada including top venues such as the House of Blues, the Derby, and the Roxy in Hollywood, the Tractor in Seattle, and the Buddy Holly Center in Lubbock, Texas.

Pep Torres has returned to Europe the past two summers : August 2004 saw Pep in Lisbon, Portugal and Senigallia, Italy. After a multi-city tour of Germany, Pep was back in Spain, this time the beach resort of Cubelles. Then it was back in the States and Seattle for their “Rockabilly Ball”. October 2004 saw Pep in Mexico City. 2004 ended with a New Year’s Eve show in Las Vegas. 2005 has seen Pep Torres shows in Netherlands, Italy, Germany, and a return performance in Mexico. Pep ends the year with another New Years Bash, this time in Stuttgart, Germany. January 2006 begins immediately with shows in Spain, Netherlands and Italy.

I've always wanted to read a book about Johnny, but always get sidetracked at the bookstore. Last time I finally went to the right section and there were way too many to choose from. Anyone know if there is an actual biography out there of him, or is they all just someone spouting off what they want you to know about Johnny. I want to know what Johnny wanted me to know about himself. Make sense? Any suggestions?

Cash on the Simpsons

This is kind of strange, but Cash has been on the Simpsons twice this week. They played I've Been Everywhere on the rerun episode last friday when Homer gets an RV. Then yesterday Homer eats hallocenogenic peppers (one of my favorite episodes)and goes on a trip and Cash is his spirit guide! Just thought it was kinda cool. The Simpsons are awesome and to see "they" like the Man in Black makes them even higher in my book.

"El Viaje de Nuestro Jomer (The Mysterious Voyage of Homer)"
809 3F24
Original Airdate: 1/05/97

At the annual Springfield Chili Cook-Off, Homer eats super-spicy chili made with a dangerous Guatemalan pepper grown by mental patients. The pepper has a powerful hallucinogenic effect and Homer wanders off into the darkest, strangest regions of his mind. Guided by a talking coyote, he goes on a voyage of self-discovery and realizes that he must find his soul mate. When he emerges from his fantastic trip, he returns home to Marge, who is furious at him for disappearing. Marge yells at Homer and tells him that she is not his soul mate, which sends Homer on another voyage to find out who is. Is Barney Homer's soul mate? Is Moe? Is some guy who placed a personal ad? Homer wanders the streets of Springfield, eventually winding up at the lighthouse at the edge of town, under the impression that the lighthouse keeper is his soul mate. Ascending the stairs to the top of the lighthouse, Homer discovers that the lighthouse is operated by a computer. Enraged, Homer shatters the lighthouse's giant light. As a giant barge approaches, Marge arrives on the scene and helps Homer save the boat. She then tells Homer that of course she's his soul mate.
Guest Star: Johnny Cash as Coyote

Dylan on Cash

just finished the bob dylan autobiog. very entertaining. here's what the hebrew from hibbing had to say about the man in black:

Johnny didn't have a piercing yell, but ten thousand years of culture fell from him. He could have been a cave dweller. He sounds like he's at the edge of the fire, or in the deep snow, or in a ghostly forest, the coolness of conscious obvious strength, full tilt and vibrant with danger. "I keep a close watch on this heart of mine." Indeed.

Man In Black - lyrics

Sorry if this is a redundant post - I'm new here!

I'd always known Johnny was referred to as the man in black, but heard the song for the first time a few months ago, amazingly. I Listened to it about six times in a row, and it still nearly brings me to tears. His solidarity with the victims of rampant capitalism, mandatory drug sentencing, immorally waged war, and his subtle jab at the hypocritical Christian majority are as relevant today as ever.

Well, you wonder why I always dress in black,
Why you never see bright colors on my back,
And why does my appearance seem to have a somber tone.
Well, there's a reason for the things that I have on.

I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down,
Livin' in the hopeless, hungry side of town,
I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime,
But is there because he's a victim of the times.

I wear the black for those who never read,
Or listened to the words that Jesus said,
About the road to happiness through love and charity,
Why, you'd think He's talking straight to you and me.

Well, we're doin' mighty fine, I do suppose,
In our streak of lightnin' cars and fancy clothes,
But just so we're reminded of the ones who are held back,
Up front there ought 'a be a Man In Black.

I wear it for the sick and lonely old,
For the reckless ones whose bad trip left them cold,
I wear the black in mournin' for the lives that could have been,
Each week we lose a hundred fine young men.

And, I wear it for the thousands who have died,
Believen' that the Lord was on their side,
I wear it for another hundred thousand who have died,
Believen' that we all were on their side.

Well, there's things that never will be right I know,
And things need changin' everywhere you go,
But 'til we start to make a move to make a few things right,
You'll never see me wear a suit of white.

Ah, I'd love to wear a rainbow every day,
And tell the world that everything's OK,
But I'll try to carry off a little darkness on my back,
'Till things are brighter, I'm the Man In Black.

due to years of frivoulous living and no job (and bad spelling apparently; how the fuck do you spell, "frivilous"?), i'm forced to sell some very treasured items.

among them, my Martin guitar i bought last year (see here):

http://seattle.tribe.net/thread/cf778286-ceac-4057-875c-f79cda240732?tribeid=9172ff6a-4963-40c2-90dd-e591bccdd1e9&r=10302

anybody game? i bought it for about 700 bones but would be willing to part with it for 500 and/or a date with natalie portman. it's accoustic but it's got the amp plug-in for live playing.

and, sadly, i haven't played it that much. my obsession to play like the man in black was soon replaced by an obsession to play the piano like the black man after i saw the movie, 'Ray'.

i can now play some mean blues and poverty will play the role of my sultry muse.

anybody down? i feel fucked for having to sell it so soon.

seemed to be loosely based on the likeness and legacy of Johnny Cash. Anyone else notice this? Harry's demeanor, dress, and presence was, imo, a direct correlation to the way Johnny came across. Cool role played by Mark Collie.

? Trick or Treat?

It was simple, but I was impressed.
Last night, I was handing out goodies from my "throne" I set up in my driveway. Some kids approached. One kid, looked to be maybe 16, was carrying a guitar and wearing a black shirt and blue jeans. He walked up, and said in a deep-ish voice "hello, I'm Johnny Cash". He held up his pillowcase and said trick or treat. I dropped the goodies into it, and he said "thank you ma'am". Then he stepped to the side, set down his goodie bag, and proceeded to play a few notes on the guitar. Not an excellent guitar player, but he was at least trying. Then he left with the rest of his group.
It wasn't a fancy costume, but it wasn't just some stuff thrown together. He put thought into it, and I appreciated that. I also thought it was a nice tribute to Johnny.
I even told the kid as he was leaving, that I thought he had the most creative costume I'd seen all night. (Yeah, sadly I saw a LOT of really lame stuff this year.)

It was the sort of thing kids in my age group used to do. We put some thought into our costumes.
The fact that it was Johnny Cash really impressed me.

Anyway, I just wanted to share that with someone, and I thought you folks might appreciate it best. :)

One of my fave cigar box art pieces I’ve done is of Cash. You can see it here http://c.myspace.com/00026/93/16/26856139_l.jpg

It sold in one day from the shop that carries them! I’ve been wanting to do a new one of Johnny, but I’m afraid I’d hafta keep it for my very own!

The cigar boxes I've done seem to move extremely well in both the US and Canada - you can take a gander at them here
My good friend, fellow hardcore fan of the Man in Black, and founder and moderator of this tribe, Miranda (black umbrella), died one week ago today in an automobile accident. She was a great woman, and a good friend, and she will be missed.

This is a jump from another thread. I had heard that Joaquin Phoenix was cast for Johnny, but that Reese Witherspon is cast for June is totally unacceptable. I agree that Sissy Spacek would be great for the role. How about Willem Dafoe for Johnny? Why does Hollywood nearly always have to take a great theme/story and turn it into a piece of shit?

I had the pleasure of watching Hootenanny Hoot on TCM today and seeing a lil' cameo of Johnny signing, I think, "Frankie and Johnny" is the title. He's obviously lip-synching and it's an OK little B&W B movie from the early 50's but it had some great musical cameos. Pick it up if you get a chance.

It's a cover of Bob Marley's 'Redemption Song, and it's one of the greatest things I've ever heard. Two of my all time biggest inspirations.

the ceo of this company greg koch swindled and hurt the music scene in san francisco.

he used to manage a place called downtown rehearsal which was a home to about 500 bands. the building was bought and he notified the tenants that he had negotiated a new lease with the owners and would be doubling the rent to make much needed improvements.

what he neglected to state was that the new owner was his father. he never actually made any improvements in the next year and then his father sold the building for over the ten times the price he purchased it for in the real estate boom of the dot bomb.

this created a situation where over 2000 musicians were evicted from their practice spaces. many musicians were forced to leave the city for low rents. this diminished the music scene in san francisco greatly. the rehearsal space real estate has never really recovered and there are slowly forming movements of music to revitalize our city.

so not only did he double the rents but he threw out the musicians for the sake of greed.

i believe that he is still banned from many bars and clubs in san francisco.

I just downloaded a Johnny Cash version of "I'm On Fire" by Bruce Springsteen, and realize yet again... Johnny doesn't look small or silly doing anything that he put his mind to... The way he sings other people's music sounds a bit odd at first, but it always grows on me quickly because it has his own personal twist... His voice... take it or leave it...
I expecially like one of his own songs, "Beans For Breakfast"...
(it's a classic in my book) and would be too silly for just about any other artist. I love all the innocence and small stories in the Water From the Wells of Home album too.

The day that Johnny died, or the day after (I don't fuckin' know), my band played "Ring Of Fire" at a tourist hole near Walt Disney World and the emotion was palpable - it shook the fucking roof. We couldn't take any credit, but we could share in the grief. We do the song all the time now (we figgered it in the back forty of this bar)

Pain as a release - God help us - Lord, give us reason.

Everyone in the Electronic section (about 25 or so) just stopped and watched (out of reverence?). The clip ended and everyone resumed consumering.
